Grant Us Courage Oh Lord

Grant us courage oh Lord, for we are your servant, and guard us with strength unto battle, that we may crash thy enemies as dusts before the wind – from a movie

Courage is an important trait of a believer. Without courage we cannot face the daily battles we have here on earth.

Our battles are not of the flesh but of the spirit, Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

And since the battle we have is beyond our powers as humans, we need the courage and strength coming form the Lord God who gives courage to His servants. There are many Bible verses that say God gives courage to those who need it, especially His servants who sometimes loose faith because of the difficulties of the battles ahead of them.

Deu 31:6  Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

Deu 31:7  And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit it.

Moses hands over to Joshua that office as leader of the people, to which he had already been designated (Deuteronomy1:38; Numbers 27:23.) He assigns also to the Levitical priests and the elders, as the ecclesiastical and civil heads of the nation, the responsibility of teaching the law and enforcing its observance (Deut. 31:10-13). Both these were symbolic acts, designed to mark the responsibility of the parties concerned after the death of Moses.

But one thing is evident in these verses, that Joshua needs a lot of courage coming from the Lord to lead the people of God. Deu 31:23  And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them: and I will be with thee.

David adopts the words of Moses to the Israelites and to Joshua.

1Ch 22:13  Then shalt thou prosper, if thou takest heed to fulfil the statutes and judgments which the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed.

1Ch 28:20  And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD.

To overcome the battles of life, and to be victorious in everything we do spiritually, we really need the courage coming from God. Without it, we all fail.

Psa 27:14  Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

Psa 31:24  Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.

Having courage means God strengthens the heart and let no fear becomes an obstacle to every battle that we have. But only those who hope in the Lord will be strengthened. Those who do not hope, loose also their courage.

Asking God of courage through prayers is a sign that we are fully dependent to the Lord God. And this is what God wants to see from us, to depend on Him in everything we do as His children.

Without courage, we feel fear. And we have not been given the spirit of fear but the spirit of love. 2Ti 1:7  For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

When Jesus was arrested, all His disciples ran away from Him because they fear for their lives.

Why? Because they lack the courage to fight.

When the Holy Spirit came, it gives courage to all of His disciples and from then on, they stand with faith and courage in everything they do. They did not fear of loosing their lives because of the courage that they have coming from God.

Each of us may have our own battle to win. Without courage, we will fail. Remember that the courage will always come from God, through His words, faith will come and with faith in our lives, we all have the courage to face anything in our lives. Be it trials, sufferings, temptations and other things … we will all be victorious because God wants us to be victorious.
